York Dungeon

York is a wonderland of medieval architecture, narrow passageways and whimsical street names. Enclosed by impressive 13th century walls and home to endless traditional pubs, quaint shops and the largest medieval cathedral in Northern Europe, it’s no surprise that people from around the world travel to this friendly Yorkshire city as a means of stepping back in time. But what about the darker side of history?

If you’d like to relive the captivating, chilling and often quite gory past of the city in spooky, shadowy surroundings, York Dungeon is the perfect place to visit. Close to the station and just a five-minute walk from our Park Inn by Radisson York City Centre Hotel, it’s easy to find and is one of the city’s most popular attractions. Be warned though, a visit here is not for the fainthearted.

An entertaining walk through history

York Dungeon will take you on a 75-minute walk through over 2,000 years of history, revealing some of the darkest twists and the most stomach-wrenching turns of the city’s hidden past. With a stellar cast of comical (but terrifying) actors, fantastic special effects and very realistic scenes, you’ll find yourself in stitches one minute and running for the hills the next.

In each of the 12 live shows you’ll encounter some of history’s most memorable figures, including locally-born Guy Fawkes and notorious highwayman Dick Turpin. You’ll also learn the secrets of executions, the ins and outs of the Black Death and exactly what happened to supposed ‘witches’. You’ll discover plenty about the ghosts that still haunt the streets of the city too, just to prepare you for the outside world once more.
