York Castle Museum

As with many attractions in the city, the York Castle Museum is dedicated to bringing the lives of ordinary people from the past to life. The museum displays thousands of everyday objects and recreates rooms, shops and even whole streets. Step back in time as you explore the Victorian Kirkgate street, browse shops, wander around the backstreets and alleyways, all as you listen to real stories of York's historic inhabitants as they go about their business.

Step into the Victorian Age

Stroll along the cobbled replica Victorian street called Kirkgate and see how rich and poor lived side-by-side. Kids will love the classroom where they can see how different education was for children in the past, what uniforms they wore and what their desks and equipment looked like. The shopping experience here is realistic as each store is based on actual Victorian York businesses that traded in the late 19th century. During your visit, you will come face-to-face with local characters. Feel free to chat to them to find out more about their lives.

The Castle Prison

As part of your visit, enter the castle's prison buildings and hear the historic tale where Dick Turpin, the infamous highwayman, was hanged in 1739 for horse theft. The prison buildings recreate the overcrowded conditions and convey the harsh reality of imprisonment at that time through real life stories. Dick Turpin spent the last six months of his life in the Debtors' Prison, which is now home to half the museum's displays. The other half of the prison was originally for female prisoners.

The museum is open daily from 9.30am until 5pm and offers great family value as all kids under 16 years old receive free entry. From the Park Inn by Radisson York City Centre, you are less than a 10 minute walk from York Castle and many of the city's other top attractions.
