The Ironbridge

Tucked away in the small town of Ironbridge lies the world-renowned symbol for the beginning of the industrial revolution, the world’s first iron cast bridge. Cast in 1779, it was simply a replacement for the ferry used to cross the river. However, now it is a marvel for the millions of visitors who make the journey to wander across history.

The surrounding town, dubbed Ironbridge as a tribute, lies in the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as Ironbridge Gorge. Enjoy a walk along the river and make sure you take it all in. This green wilderness is home to incredible nature including the muntjac, Britain’s smallest deer. Your journey along the river will lead you to the crossing and the tollhouse. Here you can delve deeper and learn more about the fascinating history of the structure itself including how it was made and why this was such a historical feat.

Although the bridge is always on display, if you wish to visit the tollhouse be sure to check it is open, as opening times and days vary.

Across the water and into the city

While crossing the water you will have an excellent view of both the beauty of the river and the charming village. This small market town is a reflection of times past being home to ten museums including the unforgettable Blists Hill Museum. Before you make the trip back to your hotel, perhaps find a quiet café and enjoy a warm drink, or continue on to explore one of the other museums the town has to offer.

Ironbridge is only six miles from Telford and is accessible via car, train, bike and bus. You can ask the receptionist at Park Inn by Radisson Telford for the best way for you to get there.
