Castle Ashby

There is nothing quite like taking a stroll around a tranquil English country garden and from the Park Inn by Radisson Northampton Hotel, Castle Ashby is just a 20 minute car ride away. As well as historic gardens, you are presented by a stunning late 16th century castle.

The castle

Building of the magnificent Castle Ashby House began in 1574 and was completed in the early 17th century. The design was originally to represent the letter E as a tribute to the coronation of Queen Elizabeth I. Over the years, various aspects of the building have been adapted but it still stands proud in the gardens.

The gardens

The incredible gardens spread out over 35 acres, but in its entirety the whole estate covers 10,000 acres. Everywhere you look there is something to catch your attention. Although an English country garden, there are definitely strong influences coming from Italian design. The intricately designed Italian Garden and Orangery offers manicured lawns, perfectly shaped shrubs and bushes, all centred around a pond. Keep your eyes peeled for the many fish who live there. The whole family will love the butterfly garden with over 18 species to be seen. Each plant is carefully selected to attract a number of colourful butterflies and insects. The Maltese Cross and Rainbow border offer vibrant flowerbeds that will capture your attention. Stroll the Arboretum, where some trees date back to the 1860s, and follow the beautiful nature trails to complete your visit.

The Menagerie and more

The Menagerie is the highlight for any visiting kids, but there is also plenty for the adults too. The meerkats are the stars of the show but you will also see the small and curious marmosets, pigs and goats and much more. The children will have a blast at the play area too. When hunger gets the better of you, the Walled Garden Tea Room offers a delicious afternoon tea and other treats. Don't forget to stop by the plant centre to pick up your favourites before you leave.
